(CAPL) Chief Executive Officer Liew Mun Leong said. The government last week said it’s concerned that shoebox apartments are mushrooming in the city-state as private home sales surged to a three-year high with record purchases of units that are smaller than 50 square meters (538 square feet). “I am dead against shoebox developments,” Liew said in an interview at the downtown Singapore headquarters of Southeast Asia’s biggest developer. “The government should intervene. Singapore’s land is very precious and you are wasting your scarce resources” by building shoebox apartments. The island-state’s population gr

Shoebox flats, which are 50 sq m (about 540 sq ft) or smaller, have been gaining ground among homebuyers in Singapore, and have proliferated, with many being built in suburban areas. But the shoebox market in the heartland is 'untested', Mr Khaw said in Parliament, echoing earlier warnings from property consultants that it remains to be seen if tenants will bite. The minister also said the Government is 'monitoring the trend of shoebox units in Singapore' and will consider 'additional regulations'

Currently, about 8 out of 10 shoebox apartments are located in the city, appealing to singles and expats with lower transportation costs and travelling time to their workplace. But analysts question the appeal of shoebox units in the heartlands, where HDB flats are in abundance, providing more space for less rental. Cheaper mortgage rates and plenty of liquidity were pushing investors to property, but speculation may be waning. Since December's cooling measures, transactions of uncompleted units in the resale market dropped to four per cent, while the number of private residential properties bought by foreigners and
