Living Large in Tiny Shoeboxes

Now that I have moved into yet another spanking new shoebox apartment, decorating and fixing stuff up from scratch, let me share some tips on living up the space to the fullest.

1. Go multi-purpose, multi-function

Where space comes at a premium, every inch counts. You want to buy stuff that can perform dual, triple or more roles. Ikea has a lot of ready to use examples.

Daybed - sofa, bed, storage rolled into one.

Side table with storage.
Removable cover is also a serving tray.
Pot holder, doubles up as table cloth.

Chopping board, doubles up as placemats.

Multi-cooker, steam, boil, cook rice at one go.
Available in qoo10.

Multi-function scissor -
knife, scissors, can opener

2. Make use of vertical space

Hangs over doors

Fix a drop leaf table to the wall.
Mount two heavy duty hooks onto the wall
on either side of the table to hang up both
folding chairs when not in use.

3. Foldable, stackable, nestable pieces save lots of space

4. Movable pieces make for easy placement/rearrangement

Easily movable, slim depth, supports up to 20kg.
Typical 46" LED TVs are around 12-15kg.
Anything larger will exceed the length of
the table anyway.

5. Improvise!

The following must be my best low cost instant curtain-in-minutes. Buy rails and curtains from Ikea. 3M hooks (each hook can support up to as much as 2kg). Mount the hooks onto wall (you may need a ladder or a sturdy table to get up there), wait for an hour, place the rods through the curtain tabs and then mount it on the hooks. Voila!

BBFA Singles Property DIY B.A.N.T.E.R Guide

BBFA Singles Property DIY B.A.N.T.E.R Guide   The BBFA (Bold Beautiful Forever Awesome) singles property DIY B.A.N.T.E.R guide is written for us fabulous ones who prefer a hands-on approach to a sustainable life. In our world today, resources are depleting and wastage is sinful. In creating this guide, our principle is simple:   - If I can do it, don't get someone else to do it. - If someone has already done a decent job, don't waste or duplicate the effort. - If there is no real value creation, don't do it. B UDGET Before all else, check your finances and derive a budget for your property. Ballpark is fine provided you have buffer savings or accounts in Bank Of Ahpa-ahma. Downpayment 25% (HDB flat taking HDB loan) can use CPF 25% (HDB flat/private property on bank loan) of which 5%

The many faces of HDB 2rm BTO for Singles in Singapore

1. FIRST TIMER PROFIT TOOL Finally the playing field is almost level. HDB 2rm BTO is good value for money, for first timer of average earning means, definitely recommended. There is a potential profit of 250k in 5 yrs to be made (assuming you get all grants, to be eligible salary must be as low as 1500 and below iirc). Case in point, Sengkang 2rm built 2007 resold in 2013 for 260 to 280k. In short, treat it as a money making tool for the mid term. Like how many does with their first hdb bto. 2. STEPPING STONE Once you have the 250k, it is easier to upgrade to EC if you find a partner or private if you have better earning power then. Assuming prices stay flattish or grow slowly next five years that is. 3. DOWNGRADING OPTION For those older singles looking to cash out of their current place (could be hdb or old private), it is also a viable option for downgrading. After MOP, they may even cash out and with the previous proceeds and new profit, they may get a new smaller private
